What if my doctor orders a urinalysis for my low back pain?

If your doctor thinks your low back pain might be related to a specific but rare condition, he or she may order urinalysis to rule out those conditions.

If your doctor orders urinalysis, you will need to provide a few ounces of your urine in a container your doctor will give you. You may do this in a bathroom at the doctor’s office or you may go to a lab. Sometimes, you may have to collect the urine sample at home first thing in the morning. In any case, be sure to follow your doctor’s instructions carefully. You will need to wipe your genitals clean before collecting the sample. Urine tests usually require a mid-stream sample. That means you must begin to urinate into the toilet bowl and then stop. After positioning the open container, begin to urinate again and fill the container. Seal the container tightly and turn it in. If you collect the sample at home, refrigerate it if you must store it for more than half an hour. The doctor or lab will probably ask you to drop it off right away.
